Allmand family correspondence ; circa 1852-1859.

The collection consists chiefly of letters to John O'Grady Allmand of Pegram, Paynter & Davis, Baltimore, Md., from his mother, sisters, brothers and aunt in Norfolk, Va. The letters convey news of family and friends in great detail with occasional references to political news, epidemics, etc., particularly the Yellow Fever epidemic in 1855. Many of the letters comment on the erratic behavior of Albert, an alcoholic stationed on the U.S.S. Varina. Among the friends mentioned is [Captain?] Sally Thompkins.
